Back story on IT’S YOU

I’m giving backstories on the tunes from my CD, White Lightnin’. Here’s the story for “It’s You”

A year or so ago I asked Cam (my muse and wife) what I should write a song about. “Write one about me.” Ok, that shouldn’t be too hard (not). If anybody will tell me the truth about my songs it’s Cam. “That sucks!” She’ll say. Ok, I guess I’ll work on that one some more. Or, “That line doesn’t make any sense.” or “You need to say it this way.” She doesn’t get as much credit as she should (don’t tell her I said that). The point is that I knew the pressure was on to write a GOOD one since it was about her.

So I started working on “It’s You”. It actually came pretty quick given what was on the line. I started with the idea of natural happenings, lightning, storms, thunder, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, you get the idea. I started putting that with the emotion of love. All those things you think about your partner when you’re in love. Their eyes, their smile, how they kiss, did I mention how good they kiss, how your heart beats when you’re near them, how awesome it is to be intimate. Finding the mix of nature’s major events with the feelings of love made the song almost complete. For me the chorus really brings what I was trying to communicate together. Why do I feel like this? It’s ALL of it, everything, It’s YOU!

I worked on getting the melody and the phrasing together. I was finally ready to reveal it. I called Cam into the room I had been working. Man, I was nervous. I was really touched too. I had to stop a couple of times to wipe my eyes. I’m pretty emotional and this was all about my love for her. I struggled through it and she said “Do it again”. Oh man, she doesn’t like it. Granted it was rough with all my sniffling and stopping to wipe the tears out of my eyes. I took a deep breath and took another shot. Better this time. More confident. “Do it again.” “Do you like it or not?” “I love it! Sing it again!” I must have sung it 15 times over the next couple of days. “Play my song.” Of course I would. How could I not?

“It’s You”

Verse 1:
A bolt of lightning lights up like your smile
I can see the sunshine when I look in your eyes
I hope I don’t mess things up this time
Verse 2:
Did the earth move or did my heart shake
The feeling that I’m feeling can’t be a mistake
Girl I hope that you don’t change your mind
CHORUS
Do you know why I feel like this
In all the world you’re the perfect fit
It’s in everything you do
It’s you
Like the calm of a hurricane
We touch we kiss you call my name
So softly every time we make love
If a drop of rain fell each time I knew
That I can’t get enough of you.
It’d turn a river into a raging flood
CHORUS:
Bridge:
The thunder rolls and rain pours down
But I’m standing on solid
I smile about the love I’ve found.
It’s you
CHORUS
